GMP, FDA registration and CE: questions before using a claim

Check what the document actually covers before placing a badge on a caffeine pouch label.

By Caffeine Oral Pouch Editorial

Buyer question: Check what the document actually covers before placing a badge on a caffeine pouch label.

Read the certificate scope

A search for GMP certified caffeine pouches should lead to questions about the legal entity, site, product scope, issuing party and current validity. A company may hold documents that cover only part of its work. Ask for current copies and review their applicability to the product proposed in the quotation.

Separate registration from product approval

FDA registered caffeine pouches is imprecise wording. A facility registration and a finished-product approval are different concepts. The FDA explains that it does not approve dietary supplements before marketing in the way it approves drugs. Do not use a registration number as evidence that the product is approved, safe or effective.

Do not treat CE as a generic quality badge

The European Commission explains that CE marking applies only where the relevant EU legislation requires it. A search phrase such as CE certified caffeine pouches is not evidence that CE marking applies to the product. Obtain a classification and labeling review for the actual formula and destination before choosing any mark.

Put these items in your project brief

  • Identify the legal entity, site and scope.
  • Check current validity with the relevant issuer.
  • Separate registration, certification and approval.
  • Approve label claims through market review.

A common follow-up question

Can a certificate replace market review?

No. A quality-system document does not settle ingredient permission, product classification, claims, labeling or import requirements for every destination.
